MEM160
New product
A beautiful Memento Mori in the form of a skull (made of Tamarin wood), entirely hand-carved by our artisans in our workshops. Each piece is unique, using bone and wood... with each material revealing the original character of the creation.
The expression Memento mori comes from the Latin phrase "Remember that you will die," a formula originating from medieval Christianity. It is a unique symbol of impermanence, the ephemeral, and Vanities. Expressing the vanity of earthly life, it refers to the "art of dying," or Ars moriendi. It suggests an ethics of detachment and asceticism. It is closely related to another Latin phrase: "Sic transit gloria mundi" ("Thus passes the glory of the world").
Its origins date back to Greco-Roman antiquity, when a slave would stand next to a victorious general during his triumph to remind him of his mortal condition. The phrase "Hominem te esse" ("You too are but a man") was also used.
This view of the human condition has led to numerous artistic representations, identical to the one you discover here.
