Congolese mask. Contrary to other African peoples, the Congolese have carved few masks. There is a certain incongruity between the peaceful expressions on the masks and the term "ngobudi" used to designate them. Ngobudi refers to a frightening object, or a spirit or force that stirs up unrest. Even if the mask is white, this evokes the spirits of the dead.
